About this listen
This isn't another "I hate you because I secretly love you" story. Boy really does hate girl. And this isn't just a forbidden love story. This is obsession at its darkest.
I don't believe in fairy tales and Prince Charming.
I believe in fear.
He taught me how to be afraid.
We first met on a playground on a wonderful summer day. It was the first time he hurt me and it wouldn't be the last. For 10 years, he's been my tormentor and I've been his forbidden. But then he went away, and yet I was still afraid.
Now, he's back, and wants more than just my tears. You see...he thinks I sent him away so now he wants revenge...and he knows just how to get it.

Ok so I have been tossing up wether or not I wanted to read this series for ages because the reviews were so contradictory. I wasn’t sure I could handle the dark content that was described in the bad reviews. BUT I’m so glad I buckled and give it a go. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely didn’t love the forceful way Keiren was with Lake especially through out the first 7 hours of the book. But there was so many little things he did that gave you an insight into how he really felt about her & cared for her in his own way that sort of countered his bad behaviour towards her. He knew that she wanted him just as much as he wanted her even though she was resisting him & fighting the way her body reacted to him because she was scared of him. I feel as though he wouldn’t have been so forceful with her if he didn’t know she wanted him as well. And she did, but it was definitely dubious ‘consent’ & originally caused by manipulation on his behalf. He is also over the top protective and excessively controlling. But Lake craves his touch & attention even though it makes her feel guilty because she’s scared of him. It’s really not a healthy relationship. He’s definitely all sorts of screwed up and towards the end you get insight into why he treated her the way he did. I hate that even though he was so horrible I couldn’t help but see the softer side of him that he tried so hard to hide. I also couldn’t help but feel sorry for him at times. It’s definitely a confronting read with lots of triggers so just be prepared. After the first 7 hours their ‘relationship’ changes to something that almost resembles normal and Lake really starts to use her voice because she’s not scared of him anymore. There was plenty of curve balls and the story kept me super enthralled. Definitely not a boring read. On a positive I really liked how the relationships of the other characters developed and some of the banter/interactions had me laughing often. Looking forward to hearing from Keiren’s POV in the next book ‘Fear You’.
I hate to love this book!

For starters, the relationship between the main characters is borderline psychotic. I can handle problematic characters and am not necessarily put off by a troubled and tortured soul. I have read other books which contain relationships with dubious consent and some degree of coercion and bullying in the beginning but they have been able to level the playing field and develop the relationship to a degree that at least resembles some kind of progression into more healthy territory.
This book just screams Stockholm syndrome and there's just nothing sexy about it. Its just off-putting. I found myself cringing and alarmed at pretty much all of their encounters. I can't find a single moment in this story where I had any kind of emotional investment in their relationship. It honestly reads more like a child abuse autobiography than a love story. Even the title of the series, broken love indicates some kind of love between them but I just can't fathom how she could truly feel love given everything that has happened to her at the hands of Kieran. Its just unhealthy and wrong.
I found the age of the characters very concerning. As high school students, i can't help but feel this book is aimed at an audience of the same age or maybe slightly older. Its alarming that this is held up as an example of a love story when it really is a horror story and relationships of this kind should not be portrayed as even slightly romantic.
I mean, he repeatedly abuses her. Threatens her life. Threatens the lives of her family and friends. Even in the absence of physically restraining her (which he did) or the lack of overt verbal protests, this kind of coercion is not consent.
I dont know guys, I really have an open mind and am not easily offended but I just struggle to see how this book has appealed to anyone.
But thats just my two cents.
FWIW, the narrator did a fine job and I dont have anything negative to say about the authors writing technique, its just the content which was really lacking any kind of development, depth or redemption.
Sorry, but its a hard pass for me.
