This is excellent!

I listen to my favourite childhood books when I can’t sleep. Jan Francis has read most of the books so far. MEL GIEDROYC is *BRILLIANT*. Every character has a individual voice. It’s not just someone reading the book in there own voice. I really, really enjoyed this. PLEASE give MEL GIEDROYC more books to read. So good!

Pure Nostalgic Indulgence

Let's start by saying that I'm a middle aged man, and this is not the kind of thing I'd normally listen to -- but it was in a 2 for 1 sale and I felt I would treat myself to a little childhood nostalgia.

I grew up on the Famous Five; I'd read all twenty one books by the time I was eleven, and was thoroughly captivated by the world of adventure that Enid Blyton had created for us.

So, I took a few hours out of my life to recap on this childhood classic, now in audiobook format -- and I'm not disappointed at all.

Yes, some people will complain about the updated wording and introduction of more politically correct language, and I agree that they have a point -- If I was buying the books I'd be searching ebay for some unaltered original copies -- but it's not worth getting fixated on, because the story and characters are still the same, and the language may make more sense to modern youngsters.

I forgot how much of an ******* Uncle Quentin was!

My recommendation is that you get this and the rest of the series for your kids (or yourself), and take your imagination back to a more innocent time!

Excellent narration and story

Mel was excellent reading this and deserves lashings of ginger beer for her efforts.

It’s a long long time since I read these books as a child and listening to it again reminded me of a simpler time and of a nicer life. The story was surprisingly intense at times and although my older eyes can see the plot holes, I enjoyed it greatly.

My kids adore the books. I’ve bought 1,3, 4 & 5 (cheaper if you buy the kindle version and add on the audible version. I’ll buy 2 shortly as this has made me want to revisit them. Mel was a revelation.

7 years old grandsonloved it.

A trip down memory lane for this old timer. A timeless children's classic which shows why Enid Blyton was so popular with children of all ages.

Really exciting story for children.

My 7 Yr old son loved it and I enjoyed it too. There are no bad manners, attitudes or materialism in the story which is rather refreshing. Encourages imagination.

Very nostalgic but dreadful narration

I thought I would treat myself to a Famous Five and remind myself how exciting they all were when I was reading them as a child. The story didn't fail to bring back nostalgic memories (some 50 years on!) and at first I thought Mel Giedroyc was going to be a good reader. Not so though. She seemed to get quicker and quicker, and when reading narrative, often spoke so fast that I had difficulty in following what she was saying. It completely spoilt my enjoyment. I would certainly listen to other Famous Five stories but not read by Ms Giedroyc!

Jolly Romp

Mel Giedroyc reads this 'Jolly Romp' really well, much better than the Jan Francis versions !
An audiobook than should be listened to by any age.
