Märchen bildet in China kein streng gesondertes Gebiet. Von den Ammengeschichten und Fabeln bis zu Göttermythen, Sagen und Novellen sind die Grenzen durchaus schwankend. Das Wunderbare gehört für China noch zum natürlichen Weltlauf, so dass hier sich keine scharfe Grenze ziehen lässt.
Unter den Wilden im Süden gibt es sehr viele Stämme. Da gibts die Hui, die Li, die Yau, die Babesifu und viele andere. In Kuangsi haben sie dreiundachtzig Niederlassungen. Die stärksten aber sind die Li. Unter ihnen nun herrscht die Sitte, dass wenn ein Mädchen mannbar wird, man für sie immer erst einen vorläufigen Ehemann ins Haus nimmt.
