Märchen bildet in China kein streng gesondertes Gebiet. Von den Ammengeschichten und Fabeln bis zu Göttermythen, Sagen und Novellen sind die Grenzen durchaus schwankend. Das Wunderbare gehört für China noch zum natürlichen Weltlauf, so dass hier sich keine scharfe Grenze ziehen lässt.
Am mittleren Yangtsekiang wird der Froschkönig sehr eifrig verehrt. Er hat einen Tempel; dort gibt es Frösche zu Tausenden und aber Tausenden, zum Teil von riesiger Größe. Wer sich den Zorn des Gottes zuzieht, in dessen Hause treten seltsame Erscheinungen auf: Frösche hüpfen auf Tischen und Betten umher; in schlimmeren Fällen kriechen sie selbst an den glatten Wänden empor, ohne dass sie herunterfallen.
