About this listen

A murdered night club mogul unlocks a web of infidelity and deceit. The most likely suspect? The daughter of the richest family in Baltimore, if only Detectives Malcolm Khalaji and Seong-Jae Yoon can piece the evidence together. The clues just aren't lining up—but Malcolm can't tell if he's missing a piece of the puzzle or completely missing the mark. The McAllister case still haunts him. So many dead. So many he couldn't save. It's throwing him off his game.

And the only one who really understands is his strange, coldly aloof partner.

A partner he can never see the same way, after a moment of intimacy that haunts him as much as the voices of the dead.

Seong-Jae Yoon is struggling in his own way. He can't solve the case when he can't trust Malcolm, and he can't trust Malcolm when the grizzled old wolf is growing increasingly erratic, increasingly dangerous. What disturbs Seong-Jae is how much he needs to trust Malcolm. He doesn't get that close. He doesn't get that involved.

But he may have no choice, if they want to stop a powerful killer from slipping away.

Contains mature themes.

A rich night club owner is about to propose when he’s stabbed to death in a hotel room. Dets Malcolm Khalaji and Seong-Jae Yoon don’t have to dig too far to find a bunch of suspects. Could it be the husband of the woman being proposed to, a shady business rival, or an angry hotel employee? Malcolm and Seong-Jae are still settling into their work partnership, they are still recovering from the trauma of their first violent case, and they’re feeling their way through all the threats from the rich and powerful involved in their current case—it’s a lot to deal with!

I really like this police procedural series and the slow-burn romance between the two main characters. There’s no sign of them acknowledging any feelings yet but I’m enjoying the exasperation each causes in the other and the slow build up of mutual respect and friendship that is emerging. This was a less gruesome case than the first book but equally fascinating, and the final showdown was full of tension and action. I’ll happily work through the MANY books in this series! 🎧 Curt Bonnem does a great job on the audio narration. He handles the character voices and their accents extremely well and he imbues the scenes with the right amount of emotion!

Loving the slow burn and the interesting cases!

The story picks up soon after book 1 and the 2 main characters continue their push, pull partnership, slowly building trust and internally fighting more. The police procedural feels honest and the case kept me interested. I love this narrator, he brings the characters to life. Book 3 already downloaded, looking forward to another night with little sleep.

Another 5 star listen for me
