About this listen

They say where there's smoke, there's fire—but Malcolm and Seong-Jae have a lot of blood and no body in a case where the only witness to a murder may be the killer himself. Yet as they chase down a victim who may or may not exist in a crime that may or may not have happened, it's the sparks flying between them that threaten to ignite into dangerous flame . . . and by the time this case is over, their relationship may never be the same. One kiss, one case, one night may change everything . . .

. . . and when Malcolm and Seong-Jae come together, someone's going to get burned.

Baltimore PD Dets Malcolm Khalaji and Seong-Jae Yoon catch a horrific case. Two teenage sweethearts are attacked when the perpetrator smashes in their car window and uses a glass shard to slice them. The boy is left for dead while the girl is missing from the scene. Was it a random act of violence or is there a motive? And where is the girl’s body? While they give their all to the case, Malcolm and Seong-Jae have little time to explore their growing attraction to each other and the awkward feelings that produces.

There was a lot of well-written tension in this story: the confusion and terror during the initial attack, the hunt for the attacker and the girl’s body, and the push and pull between Malcolm and Seong-Jae. While Malcolm is a fairly relaxed open-book, Seong-Jae continues to try to repress his feelings and keep his secrets hidden deep. There’s also the long story arc of Seong-Jae’s ex-lover who looms large over each of their crime scenes—does he have a malevolent agenda or just a mischievous one? It all makes for an enthralling read! 🎧 Actor Curt Bonnem is such a great choice for this series. He produces a scratchy voice for Malcolm and a deep, precise one of Seong-Jae so I was amazed to hear him using a completely different tone for the teenagers at the start of the book. Impressive!

Sombre and enthralling!

This series continues to entertain. Mystery, suspense, tension and a slow burn romance that keeps the listener on the edge of their seat. Curt Bonnem's narration brings the characters to life and along with Cole McCade's eloquent writing, it is a treat for the listener.

Another great episode in this series
