About this listen

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

With Malcolm on forced bed rest and off duty, Detective Seong-Jae Yoon faces his first solo case since joining the BPD—and it's one that will challenge his morals, his sense of duty, and his insistence on adhering to the letter of the law, especially when his actions in the Bishop case leave him questioning his own integrity. When the supposedly accidental death of a husband and father points to foul play in the victim's family, how close will Seong-Jae look to determine if the ends justify the means . . . and will he be able to live with the choices he makes?

Especially when his mind is as far from the case as possible, and lingering on Malcolm Khalaji, Malcolm's ex-wife, and Seong-Jae's own conflicted feelings?

Contains mature themes.

Usually implacable, Det Seong-Jae Yoon is feeling off-kilter without his partner, Det Malcolm Khalaji, who is recovering from being hit by a car. While Malcolm recovers, Seong-Jae takes on an unsettling case involving husband who has been stabbed to death, most probably by his abused wife. Seong-Jae knows the woman and her teenage daughter are lying, but he wrestles with his feelings, having no appetite to charge them. Seong-Jae’s life is in turmoil at the moment: he has to testify against his old partner, he keeps finding clues at murder scenes that might be linked to his past, and he has to fight back the jealousy he feels when Malcolm’s ex-wife moves in to oversee his recovery.

This was a rich but harrowing story. The opening scenes involving the husband’s murder were confronting and visceral—hard to stomach but so incredibly well-written! There’s also a deeply sombre tone to this story: Malcolm is physically and mentally stuck while Seong-Jae, who keeps his feelings bottled up so tight, is finding it increasingly hard to keep that lid on his emotions. Moreover, the previous progress Malcolm and Seong-Jae have made on their feelings for each other appears to falter and even go backwards here. Hoping for a breakthrough soonish🤞For all the sadness, I didn’t find this gloomy, I found it thoughtful and satisfying and I can’t wait for more! 🎧 Voice actor Curt Bonnem does another great job on the audio here, he captures the tense emotions and the characters well!

Strong writing, big emotions, interesting plot!
