About this listen

Why is it that no matter how good things get, we still feel dissatisfied? A few years ago, Matt Heath decided to find a way to live a life less punishing. He took a deep dive into why we feel the way we do and how to change it, interviewing leading international thinkers in neuroscience, philosophy, biology and psychology on the reasons behind our unwelcome emotions – anger, worry, stress, loneliness and many more.

Are you grumpy, bored, stressed or blowing up over stuff that doesn't matter? Then listen to this audiobook. Turns out, once you have the tools to unpack and take charge of your emotions, life gets better – for you, your mates and your family.

This is the audiobook you need if you want to live a happier, better life.

'This excellent book is confirmation that despite common perception Matt is actually a deep-thinking, highly intelligent human being. Who would have thought?' (Jeremy Wells, New Zealand media personality and host)
'A book as amazing and inspiring as the man who wrote it, whether he is qualified for the job or not!' (Urzila Carlson, one of Australian and New Zealand's biggest comedy stars)

Having listened to Matt Heath on up to 4 or 5 separate concurrent platforms in single 24 hour periods for what must be 15 years or more I must have heard all his chats many many many times over.

So the greatest discovery reading “A Life Less Punishing” was that there actually was new material within…

Great new material too. Relatable, interesting, plenty of reflections based on personal experiences presented with humour and humility, introspectively, without being sanctimonious in any senses, and pleasingly not devolving into the cloying realms of ‘toxic positivity’

I genuinely gathered a bunch of beneficial nuggets to reflect and improve in my own life with, cheers to Matt Heath for that. (I won’t be doing the cold showers though, sorry Matt)

I know the author Matt Heath far more closely than he knows me (naturally) having listened to his broadcasting for hundreds of hours over the years and I can vouch that Matt Heath is a real stand up guy, a great author, a half-arzed broadcaster, and a Great New Zealander
(Albeit, somewhat ignominiously groomed into F1 super-fandom by his girlfriend, in an staggering capitulation and reversal of the traditional gender norms)

Finally to me, greater than any word Matt Heath wrote for this audiobook, or all of the hundreds of thousands of words I’ve heard Matt Heath speak over the years - in proving the heart of Matt Heath are 6 words Matt replied with when I had expressed a rueful feeling of self-loathing in a text message to his radio show:

“I love you does that help?”

Yeah bro, it did help.

Thanks for the audiobook Matt, I appreciate you & your work.

Relatable, reflective & insightful; yet none of those are the most enlightening discovery in this audiobook…
