Publisher's Summary

In 10 Principles for Doing Effective Couples Therapy, two of the world's leading couple researchers and therapists give listeners an inside tour of what goes on inside the consulting rooms of their practice. They have been doing couples work for decades and still find it challenging and full of learning experiences. This book distills the knowledge they've gained over their years of practice into 10 principles at the core of good couples work. Each principle is illustrated with a clinically compiled case plus personal side-notes and storytelling.

Topics addressed include:

  • You know that you need to "treat the relationship," but how are you supposed to get at something as elusive as "a relationship"?
  • How do you empathize with both clients if they have opposite points of view? Later on, if they end up separating does that mean you've failed? Are you only successful if you keep couples together?
  • Compared to an individual client, a relationship is an entirely different animal. What should you do first? What should you look for? What questions should you ask? If clients give different answers, who should you believe?

Contains mature themes.

The Narator

Really disliked the choice of the narrator had a very annoying high-pitched squeaky voice that Comes across as a little bit pompous. 😳🤪😢 I persevered with this because I was after the content though it was somewhat arduous. This made it difficult to listen to but the overall content was science based and very interesting useful to other therapists. Try to use another narrator the next time. I like the choice of the narrator for the man’s guide to women that was easy listening.

Excellent book!

I truly enjoyed this book. Having spent about two years working on my own theraputic journey and having tried to seek couples therapy with an ex, I truly appreciate just about everything I heard in this book. I found it to be easy to listen to (despite some emotionally challenging content) because the author seems very genuine, honest, down to earth, humble and has a pleasant sense of humor. I found much of this book and the autgors presence to be relatable. The Gottman's approach seems very respecful. I can't help but wonder what my couples therapy experience would have been like with them and if it would have changed things or the outcome with my ex.

Incredible book. Incredible narraration.

It goes without saying that Julie Gottman presents amazing material. What I cannot get over is Hendrix's narraration. She has the perfect voice for reenacting the therapy sessions presented in the book.

Helpful and Informative.

the book was helpful and informative the narrator was clear and easy to understand some of the stories could have been shorter but otherwise it was a good listen. The material that came with the audiobook was helpful as well.

Not my favorite gottman book

Struggled to finish this one! The spirit of gottman is lost here. I much prefer What makes love last and even the 7 principles book. This is just a highlight without much depth.

Terrible audio

Sounds electronic not like a real person couldn’t stand it, a shame because it’s a great book

Worth a listen

Some fantastic content however I found it tiring to listen to due to the narrator’s voice. This is very much my issue but I found the narrator’s voice to be quite grating and it took some of my focus away from the content. I prefer a gentler tone I guess!

Unlistenable

I have never been compelled to write a review before, but this was so awful I wanted to save others their credits. This book sounds as though it's being read by a Sat Nav, I could not listen to it. Also, it doesn't seem to be about working effectively with couples - it seems to be about some theory/thought created by the authors. Honestly - please don't bother. I wish I could get my credit refunded, I'm so annoyed.
