В русской армии офицерское звание всегда определяло принадлежность не к социальной группе, но к касте, которая жила по своим неписаным законам - по кодексу чести. В том случае, если уложения армейских уставов вступали в конфликт с положениями кодекса, выбор офицера был очевиден - в пользу кодекса чести. Офицерский суд чести был авторитетней военного трибунала, "ибо лучше быть сосланным, разжалованным, чем утратить достоинство". Во время Русско-японской войны ротмистр Валентин Кульчицкий написал "Советы молодому офицеру", которые обобщили выработанный годами свод правил, он и стал "Кодексом чести русского офицера".
