David Hearne served in Vietnam with the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant. His 1967-1968 Vietnam tour was the basis and inspiration for his latest book “June 17, 1967 – Battle of Xom Bo II.” It is a book about a terrible battle fought during the Vietnam War that took the lives of 39 American men and left 150 more wounded. David Hearne, an award-winning author of several books, was a young 1st Lieutenant serving as a Forward Observer during the bloody ambush. His story is the result of talking to many of the survivors of the battle and the wives, brothers, sisters, or friends of those who were there when over 8000 artillery rounds, napalm and bombs rained down around LZ X-Ray to dislodge the entrenched Viet Cong. June 17, 1967, is a story of war, men, and their loved ones. It is the story of the youth, culture, and happenings that made the battle of Xom Bo II such an enigma for 1967's summer of love. The story of the battle is juxtaposed against the backdrop of the tumultuous America of the 60’s. It explores the War's impact on America’s home front. Within its pages, Hearne also delves into the lives of many soldiers who fought in the battle, who came from towns and cities all across America. Today, as the world glances back from the vantage point of half-a-century, “June 17, 1967 – Battle of Xom Bo II,” will serve as a written testament of the harrowing experiences, drama, and tragedy endured by the soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War. The book has already won awards from three literary contests; one in New England, one in Florida and another from London England. “The Christmas Special”, "Hulagu's Web - The Presidential Pursuit of Senator Katherine Laforge" and “Bloodstained Tales of Sin and Sex,” were Hearne’s previous books of fiction. In addition, David Hearne authored one nonfiction book written strictly for computer programmers. His previous books won awards from various literary contests held in Boston, Los Angeles, London and Florida. The Southeast Texas Press Club has also presented Hearne with awards for his work. David Hearne was born in Bellows Falls Vermont the second child of James and Theresa Hearne. Parts of his childhood were spent in Charlestown, New Hampshire, where his parents maintained a family home. The rest of the time David's family led the itinerant life of army dependents accompanying James Hearne, an army officer, to the various military installations he was assigned to. David's life of moving from one military installation to another offered him a broader view of the world than was available from his idyllic hometown of Charlestown, New Hampshire. His father's military assignments introduced him to diverse cultures and views as he adapted to life in places like Blackstone, Virginia, Washington D.C., Leesville, LA., Wrightstown, N.J., Tirrenia, Italy and Charlestown, NH. A principle lesson he learned at an early age from his frequent moves from the north to the south was that social truths are simply beliefs unchallenged and pragmatic to those who espouse them. He came to recognize how easily views are shaped and forged into irrefutable truths by peers, authority figures, and vocal vacuous celebrities. This exposure to the divisiveness of often-opposing views from one locale to the other taught him the need of a good command of history to help analyze and make conclusions in social matters that are so subjective. David's many life experiences have helped shape his views of the world. He has been an Army Officer and seen death many times. He has lost both his parents and an older sister to cancer. Besides being in the military, he has experienced various other careers including selling insurance, being a general contractor, managing a restaurant, running a car rental agency, being a software programmer, running his own consulting company and managing a Bed & Breakfast. In the 1990's after David published his book "Enable Command Performance," he spent months on the seminar circuit appearing in most of the major cities. In San Diego, his 1991 seminar coincided with the 6-day period of rioting and murder of 54 people triggered by the aftermath of the arrest of Rodney King in Los Angeles, Ca. He experienced firsthand the violence of rioting and felt the societal pressure to express feelings in only the politically correct vernacular of the media’s version of complicated events. David enjoys reading and new adventures in life. He still loves to travel and view the world with his own eyes and form his own conclusions on the happenings of the world he lives in. David and his wife currently own and operate the Book Nook Inn bed and breakfast in Lumberton, TX, a small town a short drive from the big city of Houston, Texas.
