Listening to The Satires by Juvenal is to come face to face with the corruption, the debauchery, the waste, the sloth, and the mean-spirited greed of ancient Rome...or is it more like modern times? The Satires comprises a collection of satirical poems by the Latin author Juvenal written in the second century CE. Juvenal wrote in the Roman tradition of “satura”, a formal literary genre composed in dactylic hexameter rather than just witty criticism in any format. The subject and argument of the poem are clear from the title. However, unlike Juvenal, Johnson espoused the view that Christian values are an essential aspect of a life well lived. While Johnson passes harsh judgement on the foolishness of greed and social pretensions, his scorn is much tempered by that natural compassion that has made him one of the most lovable figures in English literature.

Ultimo erede maschio della famiglia, di antico patriziato, è considerato un genio assoluto della poesia erotica in lingua veneziana. Autore di oltre mille e duecento poesie scritte su fogli volanti a diffusione estemporanea e cittadina, non volle mai pubblicarle in vita. Circa settecento furono raccolte in volume in un'edizione postuma, nel 1771, fintamente edita nell'immaginaria città di Cosmopoli per evitare problemi di censura.
