In a quiet small town in New Brunswick, old Agatha Treadway makes one last cranky complaint to her niece before dying on her kitchen floor. The cause seems to be a jar of contaminated string beans, which sat on Agatha's basement shelf for years before becoming her final meal. The town doctor calls it a tragic accident - and a warning to all who can their own vegetables - but Agatha's neighbor, the intrepid Janet Wadman, knows better. Agatha was an expert canner, which means the beans must have been placed there by someone else. This was murder.

Chaos is coming, old son. With those words the peace of Three Pines is shattered. Everybody goes to Olivier's Bistro - including a stranger whose murdered body is found on the floor. When Chief Inspector Gamache is called to investigate, he is dismayed to discover that Olivier's story is full of holes. Why are his fingerprints all over the cabin that's uncovered deep in the wilderness, with priceless antiques and the dead man's blood?

A clue is left at a murder scene: A page from a paperback novel. The title of the book is Murder by the Dozen, and local author, T.L. McGinnis, cannot provide any leads. Detectives Josh Riddell and Clint Weller of the Ottawa Police Service are worried about what lies ahead. It soon becomes evident their worst fears have been realized, and a serial killer is using the novel as a guide. It’s impossible to foresee and safeguard all the potential victims, and time is running out. But who is the killer’s real target?

Louise, meurtrière sans scrupules de Chère voisine, coule des jours heureux à Montréal avec ses chats. L'annonce de la vente de l'immeuble où elle habite fait voler en éclats cette belle sérénité. Pas question pour Louise de quitter son nid douillet! Une première victime, le malheureux propriétaire, s'incline devant sa détermination. Les conséquences de ce meurtre ne sont malheureusement pas celles escomptées. Louise devra jouer de finesse afin de se procurer l'argent nécessaire pour écarter la menace.
