Gwen Hensley, elemental witch, is ripped from the fairytale of small town life and her undead, wolf familiar, Sebastian. She is called to work undercover for a ruling fate, Greta, to locate another missing elder amid the chaos and politics at witch’s council. The guise of ambassador for the undead seemed a natural cover, but puts her in a precarious position when her peace and power captivate the realm master, Dmitry. The danger posed by Nikolay, a vampire uneasy with his master bringing a witch into the inner circle, forces her to draw on powers that make her even more prized and dangerous to their kind.

Dmitry, seeking to explore the possibility of more human weapons, starts a series of events that results in dead bodies connected to Gwen turning up in town. Reeling from a forced end to the romantic relationship between her and Sebastian, Gwen is set up with Shane, a witch who is seen as more suitable. Shane, despite already having a life of his own, has no choice but to pursue the now broken and vulnerable Gwen, even at his own peril. 

Still reeling from the loss of Shane and with their twins due any day, Gwen is willing to ally with any force needed to put her family enemies in the ground, before they can touch her children. The strength of her vampire keepers is no use when Fannie and Lewis remain in the between, waiting to strike, and Dmitry seems resistant to helping as he is distracted with royal affairs that have him rattled.
