What she doesn't count on is a group of terrorists blowing up all the entrances to the building and taking her and a select few others hostage. Bree soon finds herself conflicted. Not only does she know their charismatic leader, she also starts to suspect that there is a lot more to this than the hunt for an illegal bioweapon....

Chased by hordes of zombies, Nate and Bree flee the city with what remains of their merry band of miscreants. But even when most of them survive the first day, they are far from safe - because there is no safe place left. The fight for survival forces them to become resourceful, and soon they realize that the undead might not be their only problem. After leading a nomadic lifestyle for several months, they have started to rebuild a semblance of normalcy, moving between several established camps as the seasons change. Life is simple - hunting their own food, building weapons, even growing produce. Far away from the security of the settlements, they take care to stay unnoticed and, if the need arises, cull the odd horde of shamblers. Until one night, their idyllic off-the-grid lifestyle comes to a sudden end when they are overwhelmed and captured by forces unknown.

Finding the French Resistance was only the first step in achieving their mission. With impossible odds looming ahead, Bree is forced to bury the hatchet and work with Bucky Hamilton and his men to get to their destination - a secret underground lab previously part of the serum project that might just hold the most valuable thing on earth: a cure for the zombie virus.

Haunted by grief, plagued by hunger, were on the run again. And mostly not from the undead this time, since I have my own special way of dealing with the zombies. It's the living who think that survival of the fittest puts them on top of the food chain now. But there is hope for humanity yet, even if mine is possibly lost for good. Resistance is rising, the intrepid few still fighting for a better tomorrow. Maybe not all is lost for those believing they are beyond being saved or who don't give a crap about such mundane concepts.

My best friend has been murdered and turned into a zombie. I’ve fled what came way too close to a mad scientist’s lair for anyone’s good. I’ve stepped over the dead bodies of men, women, and children who I’ve risked my life for. Watched what little hope and security thousands of people have clung to for weeks go up in flames—and half of them even looking enthusiastic about it.

I survived the plague that killed millions. I escaped from the ravenous monsters when the dead refused to stay dead. I ran for my life when a last-ditch effort to contain the spread of the infection did nothing but blast the last remaining survivors to smithereens.

Now that it boils down to survival of the *ssholes, decisions have to be made and sacrifices are in order. And as much as I would like to keep my firm stance on the moral high ground, I’m really not that fond of the consequences. If only there was an alternate solution for my problems...but as I’ve recently found out, that comes with its own massive downsides.

I have survived the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse—but this is only the beginning of my fight for survival.

Ich habe mitangesehen, wie das winzige Quäntchen Hoffnung und Sicherheit, an das sich Tausende von Menschen wochenlang geklammert haben, in Flammen aufging – und die Hälfte von ihnen sah dabei sogar begeistert aus.

Ich habe die Seuche überlebt, die Millionen tötete. Ich bin den gierigen Monstern entkommen, als die Toten sich weigerten, tot zu bleiben.
