Hans Christian Andersen wurde am 2. April 1805 in Odense (Dänemark) geboren. Er war der Sohn eines armen Schuhmachers. Er konnte kaum die Schule besuchen, bis ihm der Dänenkönig Friedrich VI, dem seine Begabung aufgefallen war, 1822 den Besuch der Lateinschule in Slagelsen ermöglichte. Andersen unternahm Reisen durch Deutschland, Frankreich und Italien, die ihn zu lebhaften impressionistischen Studien anregten. Sein literarischer Weltruhm gründet auf den insgesamt 168 von ihm geschriebenen Märchen.
