Der heilige Antonius lebt als Eremit in der ägyptischen Wüste. Doch auch hier gibt es Versuchungen die sein Ringen um Tugendhaftigkeit stören: die Versuchung durch schöne Frauen, z.B. durch die Erscheinung der Königin von Saba; die angsteinflößende Heimsuchung durch furchterregende Monster; und die Verführung durch das Angebot von Macht und Reichtum.

Die Erzählung gehört zu den "trois Comtes", dem letzten Werk Gustave Flauberts. Die kurze Erzählung hält sich an den biblischen Bericht im Markus-Evangelium, Mk 6,21. Die historisch verbürgte Figur der Herodias ist die Frau des Herodes-Antipas, der sie seinem Stiefbruder Philippus weggenommen hat. Es wird die Geschichte der Enthauptung des Johannes erzählt. Jochanaan hat Herodias bei einer zufälligen Begegnung öffentlich als Sünderin angeprangert.

Nach "Madame Bovary" ist "Ein schlichtes Herz" die wohl meistgelesene Geschichte Gustave Flauberts. Mit der Magd Félicité, die ihrer Herrin Madame Aubaun über ein halbes Jahrhundert diente, schuf Flaubert einen Prototyp des demütig dienenden Menschen und geht zugleich immer wieder über diese Typisierung hinaus. Gibt der Magd Félicité Tiefe und ein persönliches Leben, deutet gar Leidenschaften in ihr an.

Es waren nicht die altbekannten Themen von Liebe, Enttäuschung, Ehebruch, Verbrechen und Selbstmord, welche die staatlichen Ordnungshüter auf den Plan gerufen hatten...

Flauberts Schule der Empfindsamkeit (L'Éducation sentimentale, übersetzt: Die Erziehung der Gefühle) beschreibt den jungen Frédéric Moreau, der nach Paris zieht, um sein Glück zu machen. Hier begegnet er Madame Arnoux, in die er sich unsterblich verliebt. Diese Verliebtheit zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch die gesamte Geschichte. Die Liebe wird erst sehr spät erwidert. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt fühlt sich Frédéric als Madame Arnoux' rechtmäßiger Ehemann.

In diesem Jugendroman Gustave Flauberts erinnert sich der Ich-Erzähler nach einem langen Novemberspaziergang durch die Natur an die Zeit seiner Jugend...

Madame Bovary ist wohl einer der bekanntesten Frauenromane überhaupt und hat eine Unzahl Nachfolger gefunden. Umso erstaunlicher ist es, das es sich um ein Erstlingsroman handelt.

But even her affairs bring her disappointment, and the consequences are devastating.

Emma Bovary lived in a world of romantic dreams. Her selfish and demanding ways led to a gradual corruption that showed her to be an utterly shallow and quite stupid woman, but her escapades and caprices draw us into her story until the tragic end.

In seguito, divenne un bestseller sotto forma di libro nell'aprile del medesimo anno, ed oggi è considerato uno dei primi esempi di romanzo realista. Del realismo ha l’accurata descrizione degli ambienti, la descrizione approfondita dei personaggi, che devono essere verosimili (Falubert ebbe occasione di dire “Madame Bovary sono io”).
