Flaubert-Zitate wie "das Glück ist eine Lüge, vom Teufel erfunden, um uns zu täuschen", waren allem Anschein nach eine Gefahr für junge Mädchen und junge Frauen. "Die Bovary bin ich", jene fälschlicherweise immer wieder zitierten Worte hat Gustave Flaubert nachweislich nie gesagt. Im Gegenteil: er indentifizierte sich zeitlebens nicht mit diesem Werk, betrachtete es als das Schwächste, das er je geschrieben hatte, und wollte kurz vor seinem Tod sogar jedwede Neuauflage verbieten. Trotz allem wurde Madame Bovary zu seinem meistgelesenen Roman.
