Die Erzählung gehört zu den "trois Comtes", dem letzten Werk Gustave Flauberts. Die kurze Erzählung hält sich an den biblischen Bericht im Markus-Evangelium, Mk 6,21. Die historisch verbürgte Figur der Herodias ist die Frau des Herodes-Antipas, der sie seinem Stiefbruder Philippus weggenommen hat. Es wird die Geschichte der Enthauptung des Johannes erzählt. Jochanaan hat Herodias bei einer zufälligen Begegnung öffentlich als Sünderin angeprangert. Diese Demütigung hat sie so verletzt, dass sie ihm seither nach dem Leben trachtet. Herodes-Antipas lässt ihn zwar festnehmen, bewundert ihn aber insgeheim und fühlt sich gegen seinen Willen von ihm angezogen. Ihre Tochter aus erster Ehe, Salome, aber bringt Herodes schließlich dazu, dass er ihrer Forderung nach dem Haupt des Jochanaan nachgibt.
