Twelve-year-old Lily sat at the kitchen table, staring at a blank Valentine’s card in front of her. It was a cold February morning, and the world outside was dusted with frost. She had just one day left to come up with the perfect way to tell her best friend, Max, how much she appreciated him.

The drive to Grandpa and Grandma’s house was always magical in December. Snow blanketed the countryside, and frost clung to the windows as Ella and her younger brother Ben pressed their noses against the car window. Jack loved his big, red cape. It wasn’t just a piece of fabric to him—it was his symbol of courage. His mom had made it for him when he was five, and since then, he wore it everywhere. Whether he was at home, in the park, or even at school, Jack’s cape was always tied securely around his neck.
