First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques.

In October 1916, Conan Doyle announced in the journal light his conversion to spiritualism. During the last years of his life, he became the crusader of this movement that preaches salvation of humanity through science. Thus, from 1920 to 1923, he gave a series of lectures about spiritualism in Australia, in USA, and in Canada. He published his autobiography, Memories and Adventures, in 1924 and opened a bookstore dedicated to spiritualism, The Psychic Bookshop in London, where he handled the editing of his own works.

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote "The Final Problem" in 1893, in which Sherlock Holmes seemed to plunge fatally to the bottom of the Reichenbach Falls in the grip of his old adversary, Professor Moriarty, he vowed to have nothing more to do with his celebrated sleuth. But the pressure of public demand, not to mention the financial offers from British and American publishers, persuaded him to relent.
