Daniel Defoe, grande appassionato di misteri, ci racconta qui di un evento apparentemente sovrannaturale, che avrebbe avuto per protagonista una coppia inglese. Il marito, patologicamente geloso, perseguita la moglie con offese e percosse, esasperando lei, i famigliari e gli amici che desidererebbero per loro un po' di pace.

Originariamente incluso in "The History And Reality Of Apparitions" (1727), "Il fantasma accusatore" riporta un avvenimento bizzarro, della cui veridicità nemmeno Defoe è sicuro. In occasione di un processo per omicidio, l’imputato - che sembrerebbe sul punto di venire assolto per mancanza di prove - assiste d'improvviso ad un’apparizione inquietante, che lo costringerà a confessare il misfatto.

"Resoconto dell’apparizione della signora Veal", originariamente pubblicato come pamphlet anonimo nel 1706, è tradizionalmente attribuito a Daniel Defoe, che all'epoca era impegnato nella stesura di vari articoli, spesso a tema spiritista. La storia narrata - secondo alcuni ispirata ad un evento vissuto dallo stesso Defoe - prende le mosse dall'incontro fra due amiche di lunga data, la signora Bargrave e la signora Veal.

Pubblicato sotto forma di libello, nel 1727, "The Friendly Daemon, Or, the Generous Apparition" riporta lo scambio epistolare fra Duncan Campbell - guarito dall'epilessia per il fortuito intervento di un angelo custode - e il suo medico, a cui viene chiesto un parere professionale su quanto avvenuto. L'uomo, esortato a dire la propria, finirà col raccontare altri eventi simili, esibendosi poi in un’erudita disamina di tutte le tecniche più strane utilizzate per guarire dai mali peggiori.

Daniel Defoe, con grande fiuto giornalistico, propone a chi legge un aneddoto inquietante - rimasto inspiegabile - che tratta con la sapiente originalità di un vero scrittore. Un nobile di campagna, costretto per motivi di salute a trascorrere l'estate ai bagni di Aix-la-Chapelle, affida la propria magione a un maggiordomo e a tre servi. Nel racconto "Il sacerdote e l’atto smarrito" - incluso in "The History and Reality of Apparitions" (1727) - Daniel Defoe riporta una vicenda narratagli dal Reverendo John Scott (1639-1695), da lui considerato una fonte attendibile. Un medico, contattato dal fantasma di un gentiluomo preoccupato per il nipote, si trova suo malgrado ad assistere quest'ultimo nel ritrovamento di un fondamentale atto di proprietà.

His fictional narrator traverses a city with deserted streets and alleyways, where the houses of death have crosses daubed on their doors. He described the panic among the inhabitants of the city as fear, isolation and hysteria reign. Defoe identifies specific neighborhoods, streets, and even houses in which the horrific events took place. Well-researched, the book also provides tables of casualty figures and discusses the reality of various accounts heard by the narrator.

In 1665, London was struck by the bubonic plague, an epidemic that was the last major instance of the bubonic plague in England. This instance of the plague killed 100,000 people over a year and a half, and was transmitted through rats that ran through the city. A Journal of the Plague Year was presented as an eyewitness account of the epidemic through the eyes of Londoners.
