Jon Steingrimson, Pfarrer aus Sída in Südostisland, war Augenzeuge eines der größten Vulkanausbrüche der Geschichte. Er protokollierte in seinem 1784 erschienenen Text die Ereignisse, als deren Folge etwa ein Fünftel der isländischen Bevölkerung starb. Die meisten Menschen verhungerten, weil die Landwirtschaft brachlag, andere hatten sich mit dem Fleisch von verseuchten Tieren vergiftet. Over zwakheden, gemiste kansen, mooie en slechte ervaringen, jeugdherinneringen en vergeefse pogingen om aan de ouderdom te ontsnappen. Sommige verhalen zijn humoristisch, anderen vol drama, ontroerend of verrassend. Mieppie werd helemaal kaal, maar we bleven naar de tuin gaan. Dat was haar vluchtoord. Effe weg van die witjassen. Als ze daar zat, voor ons huissie, was Miep toch gelukkig. Op een avond regende het een beetje.

Twee maanden na het uitzitten van een lange celstraf ontvoert en doodt Martin C. de 13-jarige scholiere Sybine Jansons. Door zijn sluwheid en fouten bij het onderzoek blijft C. nog maanden op vrije voeten en verkracht hij opnieuw enkele vrouwen. Voor de doodslag op Sybine en twee verkrachtingen kreeg de Amsterdammer zeventien-en-een-half jaar cel en tbs met dwangverpleging.
