"La tregua" è il racconto del ritorno di Primo Levi, il seguito di "Se questo è un uomo", che racconta le esperienze dell'autore durante il lungo viaggio attraverso Russia e Europa dell'Est per tornare alla sua Torino. Un viaggio assurdo, fatto di incontri con persone di civiltà e lingue diverse ma tutte vittime della stessa guerra. "Ci sono voluti anni per capire che quello che veniva etichettato come un testimone era uno dei più grandi scrittori del Novecento non soltanto italiano: cioè che era il migliore dei testimoni proprio perché grande scrittore."

Costruito dal Centro internazionale di studi Primo Levi, "Auschwitz, città tranquilla" ci offre dieci suoi testi narrativi, incorniciati da due poesie: dodici punti di vista, inaspettati e avvincenti, sulla maggiore tragedia collettiva del Novecento. Nel segno di un paradossale titolo d'autore, la "città tranquilla" del campo di sterminio si apre, in questa antologia, in ogni direzione: quella fantastica, nel trittico di racconti distopici e "tedeschi" costituito da Angelica Farfalla, Versamina e La bella addormentata nel frigo.

Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Primo Levi, vingt-quatre ans, juif, lutte aux côtés des maquisards antifascistes du Piémont. Capturé en 1943, il se retrouve peu après à Auschwitz, où il demeurera plus d'un an avant d'être libéré par l'armée russe en janvier 1945. Au camp, il observe tout. Il se souviendra de tout, racontera tout : la promiscuité des blocks-dortoirs, les camarades qu'on y découvre à l'aube, morts de froid et de faim ; les humiliations et le travail quotidiens, sous les coups de trique des kapos.

In otto, densi capitoli Primo Levi torna sull'esperienza dei Lager nazisti per leggerla non come un fatto conchiuso, un incidente della Storia, ma come una vicenda esemplare attraverso cui è possibile capire fin dove può giungere l'uomo nel ruolo del carnefice e in quello della vittima. Opera altissima sulla natura del male e sulla natura dell'uomo, "I sommersi e i salvati" rappresenta un contributo importante alla fondazione di una nuova, vigile coscienza critica.

Los campos de concentración y exterminio, más que resguardados por las alambradas y los guardias, lo estuvieron por su propia monstruosidad, que los hacía inconcebibles.
