Plus qu'une confession, il s'agit de dialogues pris sur le vif et de maximes, souvent piquantes, sur des personnes de son entourage et plus largement à propos de traits de caractère ou de faits de société. Jules Renard note également ses réflexions sur l'écriture et la réception critique de la littérature.
