The Gunmen of the American Wild West Collection brings to life the history of the frontier west of the Mississippi in the latter parts of the 19th century. The gunmen ranged from lawmen to cowboys, ranchers, and outlaws. Most of the outlaws in the Old West preyed on banks, trains, and stagecoaches. Although spread thin, the law was present, usually on the level of deputy US marshal, county sheriff, and the town marshal or constable.

J. W. Schultz (1859-1947) was an author, explorer, and historian who lived among the Blackfeet as a fur trader. In his famous book Rising Wolf, Schultz tells the story of Hugh Monroe who came to the Blackfoot country when he was 16 and was adopted into the Blackfeet tribe. He accompanied war parties, took part in buffalo hunts, and helped to make peace between the Crows and Blackfeet.

The Chisholm Trail was approximately 800 miles long, running from San Antonio, Texas to the shipping pens at Abilene, Kansas. This trail was an important part of the old west and part of the lives of thousands of cowboys of the 19th and into the early 20th century. Millions of cattle and horses accompanied their drivers on the two to three month journey; its economic importance extended across the nation to the east as the livestock moved over this trail was headed to market to feed much of the United States.

The cowboy is an iconic figure in American culture. With his hat, boots, and trusty horse, the cowboy rides in at a moment of crisis to intervene against the forces of evil. In the 20th century, the cowboy of the Wild West took center stage in the realm of popular literature.

Two Years Before the Mast is an 1840 memoir by the author Richard Henry Dana. A Harvard graduate, he spent the years 1834 to 1836 as a sailor on a merchant ship on a voyage from Boston to California. The journey took them past Cape Horn on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet. Dana provides detailed descriptions of ship life and the technical aspects of sailing. A chapter on California and its inhabitants offers valuable historical insights on the state which was then a foreign land.

The Texas Rangers were created by Stephen F. Austin in 1823. The Rangers have taken part in many of the most important events of Texas history, such as preventing the assassination of presidents William Howard Taft and Porfirio Díaz in El Paso, and in some of the best-known criminal cases in the history of the Old West, like those of gunfighter John Wesley Hardin, bank robber Sam Bass, and the outlaws Bonnie and Clyde.

My Life on the Plains by General George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) is a historical document chronicling the Indian Wars of 1867-1869. It provides an account of army life during the expeditions and includes a detailed account of the winter campaign of 1868 against the Cheyenne.

On Sept. 28, 1870, the 4-year-old Thomas Stringfield was captured by a band of Comanches when they attacked the Stringfield family on their wagon in McMullen County. Thomas was given the name "Two Braids" and assimilated into the tribe of Comanches with whom he lived for 40 years. In 1911, he published Captured By the Apaches which covers his life as an Apache and his rediscovery of the white man’s world after four decades. Stringfield knew the famous Chiefs Geronimio and Quanah Parker, and wrote about religion, marriage, and other topics on Indian life.

Of Plymouth Plantation is a journal written by William Bradford, leader of the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts, between 1630 and 1651. Bradford’s journal is regarded as the most authoritative account of the Pilgrims and the early years of the colony which they founded. It gives an account of the Pilgrims from 1608 when they settled in the Dutch Republic through the 1620 Mayflower voyage to North America, until the year 1647. Bradford did not write with publication in mind, so his entries are candid and colorful.

The classic dog story Stickeen is John Muir's account of what happened on an Alaskan glacier with a little dog named Stickeen. One day, Muir went exploring a large glacier during a blizzard, with Stickeen in tow. They became stranded, and the only way out was across a precarious ice bridge. Both man and dog escaped, and this triumph changed Stickeen from a rather aloof canine into a devoted companion. Muir called his adventure with Stickeen "the most memorable of all my wild days”, and wrote that the little dog enlarged his life by extended its boundaries.

Warpath and Bivouac, or the Conquest of the Sioux offers a picture of campaigning in the 1870s and records the sights and sounds of plains warfare. This campaign was the one in which General Custer suffered his famous defeat at the Little Big Horn. Finerty gives an account of the Battle of the Rosebud which preceded the Custer massacre, and also reports on the later 1879 campaign to force the surrender of Sitting Bull and his Sioux who were the last resistance after Custer's defeat.

The naturalist, author, and advocate for preservation, John Muir (1838-1914) was also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks". In the spring of 1869, John Muir was looking for ways to fund his explorations of California’s Central Valley region, when a ranch owner offered him a job herding sheep in the Sierra Nevada. In The Yosemite, Muir chronicled his experiences of the beautiful wilderness in appealingly descriptive prose. The audiobook is a treasure trove of portrayals of the shifting phases of the year in Yosemite.

The author James E Smith (1832 - 1893) served during the Civil War as Captain and commander of the 4th New York Independent Volunteer Light Artillery battery. Early Days in the Black Hills with Some Account of Capt. Jack Crawford was originally published in 1892 and features several of his adventures in the early Black Hills gold rush. It also deals with the legendary John Wallace (Captain Jack) Crawford (1847 - 1917), known as "The Poet Scout". Crawford was an American adventurer, educator, and master storyteller about the Wild West.

In 1875, Ann Coleson's narrative was published of her captivity by the Sioux Indians in the wilderness of Minnesota, and her escape through the wilds back to civilization....

J. B. Polley was only 21 when the war broke out; he enlisted in Company F of the Fourth Texas Infantry, a regiment in Hood’s Brigade. His book is based on his eyewitness account, the reminiscences of many of his comrades, plus numerous battle reports by various generals. The Texas Brigade distinguished itself for its tenacity throughout the American Civil War.

James Gillett joined the rangers in 1875 and for the next six years, he would be combatting thieves and murderers, fighting in the Mason County War, capturing vigilantes, and providing law and order for the towns. First published in 1921, Gillett's account of his six years of service relates how the Rangers maintained law and order on the frontier. Gillett witnessed the kind of action that established the Rangers' enduring reputation.

This work from 1894 offers an eyewitness account of Wyoming's Johnson County range war of the early 1890s. The conflict between cattlemen and small homesteaders erupted when cattle companies started to persecute supposed cattle-rustlers in Wyoming. The cattlemen hired armed gunmen to invade Johnson County, whereupon the homesteaders and smaller ranchers formed a posse of 200 men to oppose them.

The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought in December 1862 in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia. The battle, between the Union Army of the Potomac commanded by Major General Burnside and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee, was part of the Union Army's futile frontal attacks against entrenched Confederate defenders on the heights behind the city. Union casualties were more than twice as heavy as those suffered by the Confederates.

Captain John Smith (1904) is a gripping biography of a remarkable man and informative history of early colonial times. Captain Smith already had an adventurous life before he saved Jamestown colony, among other actions by forging relations with the Powhatan tribe.

Theodore Roosevelt delivered this speech in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the laying of the corner-stone of the Pilgrim Memorial Monument on August 20, 1907. He remarked on the Puritans’ individual initiative, common sense, and ability to cooperate. Above all else, their sense of duty is singled out as a commendable quality.
