"The Ugly Duckling" is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. When the tale begins, a mother duck's eggs hatch. One of the little birds is perceived by the other birds and animals on the farm as a homely little creature and suffers much verbal and physical abuse from them. He wanders sadly from the barnyard and lives with wild ducks and geese until hunters slaughter the flocks. He finds a home with an old woman but her cat and hen tease him mercilessly and again he sets off on his own. He sees a flock of migrating wild swans; he is delighted and excited but he cannot join them for he is too young and cannot fly.

"The toad" is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. A very exciting story of a little toad, who motivated by the excitement for adventure, leaves his home at the bottom of a well, and his curiosity leads him into some very interesting adventures. He bears inside his head a most precious jewel, the ceaseless longing for a higher experience. In the end he is carried as far up on a stork's mouth as he ever could be. The Emperor of China learns that one of the most beautiful things in his empire is the song of the nightingale. When he orders the nightingale brought to him, a kitchen maid leads the court to a nearby forest, where the nightingale agrees to appear at court, where it remains as the Emperor's favorite. When the Emperor is given a bejeweled mechanical bird he loses interest in the real nightingale, who returns to the forest. The mechanical bird eventually breaks down; and the Emperor is taken deathly ill a few years later. The real nightingale learns of the Emperor's condition and returns to the palace; whereupon Death is so moved by the nightingale's song that he allows the Emperor to live.

"The Fables" of Jean de La Fontaine are classics of French literature. "The Fables" were regarded as providing an excellent education in morals for children, and the first edition was dedicated to the six-year old Dauphin, the Eldest Son of the King.

Petits ou grands, nous avons tous en tête des fables de La Fontaine : "Le corbeau et le renard", "La cigale et la fourmi", "La grenouille qui veut se faire aussi grosse que le bœuf", "Le chêne et le roseau", "Le lièvre et la tortue", "La poule aux œufs d'or" et tant d'autres. Chacune de ces fables est une petite histoire, avec des mots simples, et contient des vérités qui servent de leçons. Il y a un peu de nous, un peu des autres, un peu de tous, dans chacune des fables. Comme le dit si bien l'auteur, Jean de La Fontaine, "tout parle en mon ouvrage, et même les poissons, ce qu'ils disent s'adresse à tous tant que nous sommes ; je me sers d'animaux pour instruire les hommes".

L'empereur de Chine, qui ne quitte jamais les limites de son palais, ignore qu'il existe un peu plus loin, au-delà de ses jardins maniérés, des lacs profonds et des bois touffus que les gens du peuple connaissent bien.

Les aventures de Renard servent à divertir tout autant qu'à instruire. C'est une adaptation d'une des œuvres les plus vivantes de la littérature du Moyen-Age, destinée aussi bien aux enfants qu'aux adultes. Renard est très ingénieux : il arrive toujours à se tirer d'un mauvais pas avec malice. Les ruses de Renard font vite comprendre que l'esprit domine souvent la force, l'intelligence avisée domine la sottise et la violence. Cependant, si Renard arrive à duper les puissants, il échoue régulièrement quand il s'en prend à plus faible que lui.

La maman de sept petits chevreaux s'en va chercher à manger dans la forêt. Avant de partir, elle met en garde ses petits contre le loup qui sait se déguiser, se faire passer pour ce qu'il n'est pas.

Les très célèbres fables ont été écrites entre 1668 et 1694. Il s'agit comme son nom l'indique d'un recueil de fables écrites en vers, la plupart mettant en scène des animaux anthropomorphes et contenant une morale au début ou à la fin. Ces fables furent écrites dans un but éducatif et étaient adressées au Dauphin (le fils du Roi de France).

Quand le vilain petit canard est né, il ne ressemblait pas à ses frères et sœurs de couvée. Rejeté de tous, à cause de ce physique différent, il est contraint de quitter "sa famille" et de partir, loin, pour ne plus subir leurs moqueries et leurs coups. Sur son chemin, ceux qu'il rencontre ne l'acceptent pas vraiment non plus. Un jour, cependant, ébloui par la beauté des cygnes, le vilain petit canard décide d'aller vers eux. Les cygnes ne le chassent pas et bien au contraire l'accueillent comme l'un des leurs.

Trois petits cochons décident de devenir indépendants, de vivre leur propre vie, et par conséquent de vivre seuls, comme des grands ! Le premier petit cochon se construit une maison faite de paille, le deuxième une maison en brindilles, et le troisième une maison en briques et en ciment. C'est alors que surgit le grand méchant loup, dévoré par l'envie de détruire les maisons des petits cochons.

A son décès, un vieux meunier laisse à ses trois fils l'intégralité de ses biens. L'aîné hérite du moulin, le cadet de l'âne, et le benjamin du chat. Sans un sou en poche et ne sachant que faire d'un tel cadeau, ce dernier songe à le manger mais le chat s'avère doué de parole. Contre un sac et une paire de bottes, et avec beaucoup de ruse, l'animal est désormais déterminé à faire la fortune de son maître.
