In The Nightingale, Hans Christian Andersen weaves a timeless fable of authenticity, beauty, and redemption. Set in an enchanted vision of imperial China, the story follows a humble nightingale whose song captivates the hearts of all who hear it—even the mighty emperor himself. When an ornate artificial bird replaces the real one at court, the soul-stirring power of nature is cast aside in favor of predictable perfection. But when illness and death come for the emperor, only the return of the living nightingale's song can offer healing and hope.

The Emperor of China learns that one of the most beautiful things in his empire is the song of the nightingale. When he orders the nightingale brought to him, a kitchen maid leads the court to a nearby forest, where the nightingale agrees to appear at court, where it remains as the Emperor's favorite. When the Emperor is given a bejeweled mechanical bird he loses interest in the real nightingale, who returns to the forest. The mechanical bird eventually breaks down; and the Emperor is taken deathly ill a few years later. The real nightingale learns of the Emperor's condition and returns to the palace; whereupon Death is so moved by the nightingale's song that he allows the Emperor to live.

Ten-year-old Jasper has been waiting all spring for his beloved nightingale to return to his garden and sing. But it's not there, and neither is his sister, Rosie. His parents seem sad and preoccupied, so gathering his courage, his backpack and his treasured Book of Birds, Jasper sets out alone on a walk to find them both. The expedition takes Jasper through town and country, meeting a host of characters who are also searching for lost things.

Actress Glenn Close narrates this story, accompanied by original music by Mark Isham. The Emperor and his court in ancient China discover a little grey bird with an enchanting song. But when the Emperor is presented with a jewel-encrusted, artificial singing bird, he banishes the nightingale from his court. Years later, he realizes that the song of the real nightingale is the true treasure.

La novella, che fa parte di una raccolta di fiabe (Il principe felice e gli altri racconti) pubblicata da Oscar Wilde nel 1888, narra la vicenda di un giovane studente alla ricerca di una rosa rossa da regalare alla sua amata e di un usignolo che decide di aiutarlo. Dopo diversi tentativi infruttuosi, l'uccellino trova un cespuglio di rose rosse che però hanno perso la loro colorazione a causa del freddo inverno. Così il cespuglio suggerisce all'usignolo di colorare una rosa col suo sangue.
