Evan Dalton Smith was born in the North Carolina Piedmont over four decades after Andy, just an hour south of Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy. Both were small-town boys who grew up in similar places, where the counties were dry and the churches plentiful. But for both, there was darkness, crushed hopes, and tragedy, hidden just below the surface.

In part two of the trilogy, Yadel travels through Jewish history from the Middle Ages to the present as he and Yoshen struggle to market their new Hanukkah holiday and fight off Simon and his zealots in ancient Rome. With humor, love, and nail-biting drama, the adventures of Yadel, Yoshen, and Clausius continue where part one left off, bringing listeners into the origins of Judaism and Christianity little known to most, the wars and struggles that shaped both faiths, and the fictional flare of time travel.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book because of its mix of humor, Jewish history, and pathos. The narrator of the audiobook has a wicked sense of humor but is also able to convey vast swathes of Jewish history with poignancy - the pogroms, the othering, and the sufferings and tribulations, as well as the rise of zealotry and how it destroyed the Jewish people and drove them out of their own land.

Set in modern-day America and France, Renaissance Italy and Boxer Rebellion China, these stories embrace whole lifetimes, much in the manner of Alice Munro and William Trevor. Joan Silber skilfully and subtly ties one story to the next, as a minor element in one becomes a major element in the next, until the last is tied convincingly to the first. Intense in subject yet restrained in tone, they are about longings—often held for years—and the ways in which sex and religion can become parallel forms of dedication and comfort.

This is a collection of ten one-act plays, which cover a wide range of topics -highlights include a lighthearted farce involving gossiping women, a satire about dinner parties, and a comedy about the pretensions of conventional theater, but some plays also touch on more serious themes such as death, war, and the effects of an unhappy marriage.

Ronnie is a beautiful, strong-willed, and ruthless young woman. She comes off as a demure, sweet little thing. Ronnie and her clan are a low-level troop of Romany Gypsy grifters. Fraud is the family business. She and Logan have the classic love/hate relationship. Ronnie plays him, but for Logan it is love at first sight; and for that reason he cannot escape her many charms.
