This is the second story in the Anne of Green Gables series. Skinny little red-haired Anne has changed into a pretty 16-year-old and is all grown up - well, sort of grown up. The story opens with Anne as a school teacher at Avonlea school. When Anne reached the school that first morning, she was confronted by prim rows of "shining morning faces". She had sat up until nearly midnight composing a speech which she had revised and improved painstakingly. It was a wonderful speech with fine ideas. And then, she couldn't remember it!

Five years have passed since the orphan girl Anne Shirley came to live in the childless home of Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. She has returned to Avonlea to teach in the same village school where she herself was taught. Her earlier friends, Diana Barry, Jane Andrews, Priscilla Gray, and Gilbert Blyth, have also become teachers at neighboring village schools.

When Mr. Harrison moves next door, he soon clashes with Anne. Mr. Harrison is furious that Anne's cow keeps breaking into his field and eating his oats. When Anne discovers her cow has escaped again, she makes an impulsive decision-one that gets her into even deeper trouble!

Dear old Miss Lavendar has a heart as young and merry as Anne's own. But living in the woods with only her maid for company has made Miss Lavendar rather lonely. Can Anne do anything to bring love back into her life?

The minister and his wife are coming to tea, and Anne wants everything to be perfectly elegant. Disaster strikes when Anne drops the beautiful, borrowed serving platter. There's no way around it, Anne must find a new platter. But doing so leads her into even more trouble than before....

Rilla, almost 15, can't think any further ahead than going to her very first dance at the Four Winds lighthouse and getting her first kiss from handsome Kenneth Ford. But undreamed-of challenges await the irrepressible Rilla when the world of Ingleside becomes endangered by a far-off war. Her brothers go off to fight, and Rilla brings home an orphaned newborn in a soup tureen. She is swept into a drama that tests her courage and leaves her changed forever.

Following Anne of Green Gables (1908), this book covers the second chapter in the life of Anne Shirley. We learn of Anne's doings from the age of 16 to 18, during the two years that she teaches at Avonlea school. It includes many of the characters from Anne of Green Gables, as well as new ones: Mr. Harrison and his foul-mouthed parrot, Miss Lavendar Lewis, Paul Irving, and the twins Dora (sweet and well behaved) and Davy (mischievious and in constant trouble).

Everyone who falls in love with irrepressible, red-haired Anne Shirley longs to know more of her life and adventures. Now, on the very eve of her wedding to Dr. Gilbert Blythe, we can come back into Anne's world in Anne's House of Dreams.

When Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert try to adopt a boy to help out with their farm on Prince Edward Island, they are completely unprepared for the 11-year-old girl who is mistakenly sent instead. Anne is feisty, red-haired, and never stops talking. She is also smart and incredibly imaginative, with a huge capacity for love that wins over shy Matthew, crusty Marilla, and their entire community of Avonlea.

Anne is growing up and leaving the Island to spend four years of her life at Redmond College. She meets a wonderful new friend in Philippa Gordon, offspring to an old and exclusive "bluenose" family. Phil's family ties, combined with her beauty and charm, open the gates of all the social cliques and clubs at Redmond. And where Phil went, Anne went. Thus, Anne found her social pathway at Redmond made very easy while other freshettes were doomed to remain on the fringe of things.
