About this listen

The Blythe children are almost grown up, except for pretty, high-spirited Rilla, who is almost 15. She can't think any further ahead than going to her very first dance at the Four Winds lighthouse and getting her first kiss from handsome Kenneth Ford. No one can resist her bright hazel eyes and dazzling smile.

But undreamed-of challenges await the irrepressible Rilla when the world of Ingleside becomes endangered by a far-off war. Her brothers go off to fight, and Rilla brings home an orphaned newborn in a soup tureen. She is swept into a drama that tests her courage and leaves her changed forever.

This is a wonderful account of what it must have been like for many families during World War One. It’s very moving at times, as well as featuring the signature humour we have come to expect from the “Anne” books. The narration lets this down, with the attempts at the male voices being almost comical at the most inappropriate times.

Moving account of “those left at home”

Rilla is one of my favourite books ever, and an audiobook I keep going back to!

An all time favourite

Delightful and subtle ode to the beauty of a bygone era. An elegant narration paying homage to each character’s idiosyncrasies and depth. Thoroughly enjoyable! 💐

The final reading was delightful and the characters truly bought to life. The story was delightful to hear.

Wonderful reading

I love this book, which is what pushed me to listen all the way through this performance. The reader aimed to use a variety of voices for the different characters, which was a commendable aim. Unfortunately, a number of these fell short of the mark, particularly for the male characters. I honestly would have preferred it if she had kept her own voice all the way through.

Wonderful story, but reading fell a bit short
