• How to Change Your Name and Gender Marker
    Jul 21 2023

In South Africa, the legal processes for name and gender changes are governed by specific legislation. These processes play a vital role in affirming an individual's identity and allowing them to align their official documents with their true selves. To navigate these processes effectively, it is crucial to understand the relevant laws and the steps involved. This essay aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the legal framework for name and gender changes in South Africa, focusing on two key pieces of legislation: the Identification Act 68 of 1997 and the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1992 (Act No. 51 of 1992). By delving into the requirements, procedures, and potential challenges associated with these changes, individuals seeking to alter their names or gender markers can gain the necessary knowledge to navigate the system successfully. Let us explore the legislation and processes involved in order to better understand the legal landscape surrounding name and gender changes in South Africa

  • Introduction
    May 25 2023

My name is Keegan and welcome to Upside Down and Back to Front!

I came up with the idea for this podcast after a few friends and I appeared on a local radio show. We had gone on the show to speak about how experiences of growing up as members of the Lgbtq+ community. I found it to be such an amazing experience and felt that there was so much more I could talk about but the show was a one-off. Enter this podcast, I realised the importance of sharing our experiences, and how much of a need there is for education here in South Africa. Upon chatting with members of the LGBT Support Group I am a part of, Same Love Toti, we noticed how often people were contacting us with the same questions and concerns, and we decided to try and find a way to make more resources and support available to a wider audience. That is what I am hoping to do here, I may be the host but I am far from the only person who will (hopefully) share my experiences on this show. I want to create an archive of resources for members of the LGBTQ+ community, their friends, family, or just anyone interested in learning more. I will cover things such as what it means to be Transgender, resources for trans* people, education, community stories, definitions of commonly used terms, how to find support, and much, much more. If any of this sounds like something you may be interested in, please give it a listen and consider sharing it with friends, family, or anyone who you think may benefit.
