1968 blev året, hvor Radikale Venstre endnu gang skulle indtage statsministerposten. Denne gang med karismatiske Hilmar Baunsgaard. Det var i en tid, hvor Danmarks forhold til EF blev debatteret, og RKV-regeringen var i fremskredne forhandlinger med de nordiske lande om et stærkt udvidet økonomisk samarbejde. Finland takkede nej, og der blev i stedet indledt forhandlinger om optagelse i EF. Resultatet er velkendt, men det kom ikke uden gnidninger – hverken parlamentarisk eller internt i partiet.
