  • Episode 53 - Melissa Smith
    Jul 7 2025
This week Rosie chats with long-time mate and former Police Officer Mel Smith, who opens up about the rollercoaster ride that followed her PTSD diagnosis in 2021. From life in the force starting at just 18, raising three kids while juggling the demands of frontline work, to navigating multiple hospital stays and the emotional chaos of identity loss — Mel shares it all. She talks about what it’s really like to leave a career that shaped your entire adult life, the messy middle of healing, and how her podcast Mad Mel’s Mic became both a lifeline and a way to help others feel less alone. We cover parenting while broken, hospital admissions, the reality of weight gain and mental illness, and why radical honesty is the most powerful tool in recovery. Mel doesn’t sugarcoat a thing — and that’s exactly why this episode hits so hard. It’s one for every woman who’s ever felt like she was falling apart, every former first responder trying to find their footing, and anyone needing the reminder that healing doesn’t have to be polished to be powerful. ⚠️ Language warning & capacity note: This episode includes strong language and vulnerable themes. Please take care while listening. ** Content Warning ** Due to the nature of this Podcast and the discussions that I have with Guests, I feel it's important to underline that there may be content within the episodes that have the potential to cause harm. • Episode 51 - Paul Milne
    Jun 23 2025
Rosie speaks with former NT Police Sergeant, mental health advocate, and author Paul Milne to talk about trauma, recovery, and the healing power of connection. Paul shares openly about the years he spent policing in remote Indigenous communities, the toll it took on his mental health, and the moment it all came crashing down. He talks candidly about his experience with PTSD, the lack of support after leaving the job, and the stigma that surrounds psychological injury—especially for men in uniform. But this episode is also full of hope. Paul shares the many tools he’s explored in his recovery—journaling, breathwork, yoga, EMDR, surfing, cold water immersion, and more—and how he came to believe that healing is possible, even after hitting rock bottom. Now the Chair of Lived Experience Australia, a Beyond Blue ambassador, and the author of The Urgent Connection, Paul is using his voice to advocate for change and help others feel less alone. ** Content Warning ** Due to the nature of this Podcast and the discussions that I have with Guests, I feel it's important to underline that there may be content within the episodes that have the potential to cause harm. LANGUAGE WARNING -VERY EXPLICIT ** Content Warning ** Due to the nature of this Podcast and the discussions that I have with Guests, I feel it's important to underline that there may be content within the episodes that have the potential to cause harm. Listener discretion is advised. If you or someone you know is struggling, please contact one of the services below for support. For this special 50th episode of Triumph Beyond Trauma, I’m sharing the story of Detective Sergeant Carmen Butcher — a woman whose courage, honesty, and resilience left me speechless. In 2006, Carmen was on a police study tour in Egypt when the unthinkable happened. A tour bus crash killed six people and seriously injured many more. Carmen was one of them — crushed under the roof of the bus while trying to save someone else. She was told she might never walk again. But she did. And not only that — she went back to policing, back to serving her community, and back to some of the most confronting work you can imagine. In 2018, she was named Police Officer of the Year by the Rotary Club of Darwin. This episode isn’t just about what happened in the desert that day. It’s about what came after — the fight to recover, the battles no one saw, and the grit it took to reclaim her life and purpose. Carmen’s story is intense, unfiltered, and unforgettable. It’s a reminder that healing doesn’t always look neat, and that real strength is found in showing up anyway. May 26 2025
This week on Triumph Beyond Trauma, Alice Stevenson joins the show to talk about the realities of medical discharge from the NSW Police Force—and the often hidden toll it takes on those going through it. Alice served for 10 years across a range of specialist units, including Kings Cross, Crash Investigation, and Crime Scene. After being medically discharged due to PTSD, she co-founded Signal 2 Support, a charity that helps police navigate the confusing and often isolating discharge process. In this honest and important conversation, Alice shares: What it’s really like to go through a medical discharge The gaps in support that officers commonly face How Signal 2 Support is helping to change the experience Why peer-led, independent help is so critical Whether you're in the early stages of discharge, supporting someone who is, or simply want to better understand the challenges facing first responders—this episode is full of practical insights and compassionate advice. 💬 If this episode resonates, please share it with someone who might need it. * Content Warning ** Due to the nature of this Podcast and the discussions that I have with Guests, I feel it's important to underline that there may be content within the episodes that have the potential to cause harm.
