About this listen
In another notable case resolved this week, a man was sentenced for his involvement in a 2003 murder after new DNA evidence linked him to the crime. Ricky Lee Trader, age 48, was arrested last year in Reno for the killing of 28-year-old Theresa Romano in Henderson. Police records indicate that in 2003, authorities lacked sufficient evidence to charge Trader, despite interviews and witness statements. However, recent DNA testing of evidence collected during the original autopsy provided a match, leading to his arrest and subsequent extradition. Trader pleaded guilty as part of an agreement, receiving a sentence of 10 to 25 years, which will run concurrently with a separate life sentence for an unrelated 2003 homicide. His guilty plea followed more than two decades after Romano’s murder.
Authorities confirm the arrest of a county employee on suspicion of unlawfully posing as an attorney using a stolen state bar number. According to police records, 39-year-old Jerrell Roberts, who works for the Clark County Juvenile Justice Court, impersonated a licensed Nevada attorney in probate cases lasting nearly a month. Investigators allege Roberts submitted legal documents and appeared at hearings while using another attorney’s credentials, in a case involving his mother’s probate proceedings. The arrest occurred without incident inside a Las Vegas courtroom. Roberts faces eight felony charges, including identity theft, impersonation, practicing law without a license, burglary, and perjury. The case is ongoing.
Venturing outside Henderson’s direct jurisdiction but involving a Henderson resident, a fatal collision occurred on August 21 just east of Koval Lane in Las Vegas. A 20-year-old pedestrian from Summerville, South Carolina, was struck by a vehicle while crossing Tropicana Avenue outside a designated crosswalk. The vehicle, a Lexus IS, was driven by a 45-year-old Henderson man, who remained on scene and showed no signs of impairment, according to Las Vegas police. The pedestrian was transported to Sunrise Hospital but died from his injuries. This fatality marks the 106th traffic-related death this year for the area under the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The incident remains under investigation.
For the incidents described, Henderson police are not actively seeking public assistance with suspect descriptions at this time.
Over the past week, a noticeable concern remains regarding traffic safety near school zones and crosswalks, as well as a continued pattern of identity-related fraud within the county.
