Tonight, on The Sound we bring you Plain American from the band Ruben straight outta Stillwater MN! Plain American was released back in 2023 but it is such a damn good album that when the opportunity to talk about it came up, we just had to feature it on The Sound. Tonight, on The Sound we check out the debut EP Porch Light by the Minnesota based band Porch light. Starting in the Summer of 2024, they have quickly come together with a mission to break the barriers in the indie work and provide authenitc and raw proformances with a bit of a basement feel. In the band there’s Zac Fogarty on guitar, Jackie Uhas on vocals, Henry Hughes on bass, Kyle Siemon on guitar, and Isaiah Trimbo on the drums, but tonight we have Kyle, Zac, Henry, and Jackie talking with us today in studio to chat about their love of playing and how they plan on not stopping anytime soon. With teasing new songs they have yet to release and plan to play during their first tour this June, they’re Minnesota’s new up and coming band, according to me. • Patrick Lichty: Amilith and 8 Bits or Less
    Jun 9 2025

Tonight, on The Sound we journey into the mind of a madman… hehe, just kidding, or am I…? at any rate, we take a deep dive into some of the musical stylings of Professor Patrick Lichty from the Mass Com department at Winona State University. Two different releases from Prof. Lichty have recently surfaced here at KQAL and we thought what better way to make sense of it all than to talk to the man, the myth and the legend himself. And since these are releases from the past, we thought it fitting to bring back a KQAL alumni to get the job done. Former KQAL production assistant Dylan Alzate came out of retirement to dig in and get the scoop, the dirt, the real story on these two releases. What are these mysterious releases I keep mentioning? Good question. They are two distinct albums, one titled Amilith and the other titled 8 Bits or Less. Mr. Alzate and Professor Lichty grapple with the hard questions as they also delight in the joy that is music. But enough of my rambling, let’s hear them ramble about it! Here’s KQAL’s Dylan Alzate with Professor Patrick Lichty and his albums Amilith and 8 Bits or Less, tonight on The Sound.

The Americana folk band was started by Soren Staff and Beau Janke at a bible camp in northern Wisconsin, and they alongside Jens Staff, Neil Krause and Stas Hable crank out some holy tunes. Their sixth album, "No Fun in the Chrysalis" is no exception. Tonight, we had the chance to talk with Soren about the album, and the stories behind it.
