Episode 123 – 15-minute Speed Coaching with Dr Laura Stoeker

Welcome to another 15-minute Speed Coaching Session for Veterinary and Pet Care Professionals!

The rules of the game are as follows:

    · Episodes will be in-the-moment, off-the-cuff and unscripted.

    · Coaching sessions will be 15 Minutes MAXIMUM, so wherever we finish, we finish…

    · Which means that we might not find complete resolution to your question, but we will certainly get the thought process started!

In this episode, I chat to US based veterinarian, Dr Laura Stoeker, who has questions about Hyperactivity/Hypersensitivity Syndrome / Hyperkinesis in dogs.

Dr Laura's own dog struggles with these behaviours, so she has a keen interest in this syndrome, and she also has a keen interest in Behaviour Medicine in general as, like so many of us, she is seeing more and more behaviour presentations in her work as a GP vet.

In this episode, we talk about the main clinical signs associated with HSHA syndrome, the Differential Diagnoses, the purported underlying neurotransmitter imbalances and treatment approaches.

Dr Laura also shares with us what has worked for her own dog and how she manages his behaviours.

  • 122 Canine Sociability with Daniel Shaw
    Feb 17 2026

Episode 122 – Canine Sociability with Daniel Shaw

Dogs are social creatures and the need for social connection and social experiences as well as the lack of those can sometimes result in unwanted behavioural presentations.

In this super-cool episode, Daniel and I chat about:

    · The difference between fear or panic when dogs are separated from social partners and frustration at lacking or hampered social interactions with other dogs and the neurobiological systems that underlie both of these scenarios!

    · Social buffering and how this can really help some dogs that are perhaps fearful or anxious.

    · How we can help dogs adapt better to differing social demands.

    · Differing attachment styles and how these can impact social confidence and security.

    · A case I saw the same day as the recording that posed a number of challenges from a canine sociability point of view.

Daniel and I are both really interested in the neurobiological and neurobiochemical underpinnings of behaviour and, dare I say it, can totally geek out about the brain processes that underlie behaviour as well as how we can practically apply this to our cases.

If you're in any way interested in canine social behaviour, neurobiology and treatment approaches of some of the socially motivated behavioural challenges we see in our canine patients, this episode is a must-listen!
