About this listen

Welcome to the Irish Military History Podcast!

This is brand new podcast series that will explore Ireland’s boundlessly rich military history, and will examine the unique social and cultural history of the Irish at war.

Every fortnight, we will release an episode covering a unique aspect of this amazingly diverse and fascinating history, and will share with you the remarkable personal stories of Irish people, men and women, soldiers and civilians, who experienced war and conflict on these shores, and far beyond…

And when we say far beyond, we mean global. We will follow Ireland’s military story to the far corners of the earth, accompanying Irishmen and women who served in the armies, navies and air forces of Britain, France, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in conflicts all over the world.

And that’s just the modern era… we’re also going to march into battle alongside Irish emigrant soldiers who went into foreign service on the continent of Europe during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, following the stories of Irish troops who enrolled in the service of Britain, France, Spain, the Papal States, Austria, Prussia and even Russia.

We will also be delving into domestic military history, interrogating the history of Ireland’s many centuries of rebellions, uprisings, wars and revolutions, spanning from the Middle Ages right up to the Twentieth Century, which mark out the course of the long Irish struggle for independence and freedom from English and British rule.

But so too will we be taking an interest in the experience of British, and other foreign personnel, who served in Ireland during various periods, and how they interacted with the Irish population. We will cast light, not just on the flashpoints of conflict and violence that define the relationship between the Irish people and their foreign occupiers, but also the special moments of cohesion and of friendship that ultimately led to the development of Irish society, and that changed the course of Irish history.

In short, we have an endless list of topics to explore!

  • The Assassination of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson
    May 20 2022

On 22 June, 1922, Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson arrived back, by taxi, at his home on Eaton Square, London, after having unveiled a new war memorial at Liverpool Street Station dedicated to railway employees who had fallen in battle during the Great War.

Unbeknownst to him, he had been tailed home by two veterans of that conflict, Joe O’Sullivan and Reggie Dunne, who were now serving members of the Irish Republican Army. Just as Wilson stepped out from his taxi to the front door of his home, the two men approached and gunned him down in cold blood at point blank range.

Days later, on 28 June, Irish Free State Army troops besieging the anti-Treaty IRA garrison holding the Four Courts in Dublin, opened fire on their fellow Irishmen.

The Irish Civil War had begun

For the first episode of the show, Joseph and David bring you an interview with Irish Times journalist and historian, Ronan McGreevy, who has written about this fascinating Irish-born British soldier, his role during the First World War and, more controversially, his position as Chief of the Imperial General Staff during the Irish War of Independence, and how his murder contributed to a sequence of events which led to civil war in Ireland.

Ronan is the Commemorations Correspondent for the Irish Times. In this position, he has played a key role in covering the centenary events conducted by the State and local commemorative groups as part of the Decade of Commemorations programme, contextualizing these events for the benefit of the Irish public.

His first book, Wherever the Firing Line Extends: Ireland and the Western Front, published in 2016, proved highly successful. He has since served as editor of a number of edited volumes and collections, including Centenary: Ireland Remembers 1916.

During the course of this episode, Ronan discusses his work as a journalist and author throughout the past decade, and will share the subject of his new book, Great Hatred: The Assassination of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, which is being published by Faber & Faber on 26th May.
