In Book Two, Chapter Three of H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds, the narrator is trapped in a ruined house with a clergyman, hiding from the Martians. They remain silent and still, surviving on limited food and water, while the Martians work nearby. Tension grows as the clergyman becomes unstable. In Chapter 4, the clergyman's behavior worsens, and his loudness draws the attention of a Martian. To avoid discovery, the narrator knocks him unconscious. The narrator hides as a Martian enters the house.
