  • Lake of Mnemosyne
    Oct 28 2022

Hello and welcome to "Stormy Weather," a podcast of generative music and natural soundscapes with no other words than those of this brief introduction.

The ninth episode is entitled Lake of Mnemosyne and is about one hour long. The composition is inspired by the text of an ancient totenpass. The totenpass or "orphic foils" were egyptian and greek sheets of gold, placed in the mouth or around the neck of the deceased and served as a passport to the realm of souls.

The text of the one used for composition dates back to the fifth century B.C. and is given in full in the caption accompanying the podcast on all major platforms.

All sounds and the cover image were created exclusively through the use of Artificial Intelligence.

    ---

You will find to the left of the houses of Hades a spring,

and beside it stands erect a white cypress tree:

To that spring do not even approach.

But then you will find another, where cold water flows

From the lake of Mnemosyne: there stand before it the Guardians.

Thou sayest to them, "I am a son of Earth and starry Heaven:

celestial is my lineage, and you also know it.

With thirst I am burned and I fail: give me soon

The cold water that flows from the lake of Mnemosyne."

And they will give you drink from the divine fountain

And after that with the other heroes thou shalt be sovereign.

To Mnemosyne all this is sacred, when you are on the verge of death

    And darkness all around spreads.

Hello and welcome to "Stormy Weather," a podcast of generative music and natural soundscapes with no other words than those of this brief introduction.

Our eighth episode is titled Pugnax Overwintering and is about 40 minutes long.

All sounds in the episode are generated through a script capable of harmonizing data from the Euro Bird Portal. In particular, this soundscape was obtained by analyzing the density and routes of the migratory flocks of Calidris Pugnax, a bird also known by the name "Ruff".

Background listening is recommended, at a barely audible volume.

  • Madame Galen - Bignonia Vox
    Sep 14 2022

Hello and welcome to Stormy Weather, a podcast of generative music and natural soundscapes with no other words than those of this brief introduction.

Our fifth episode is entitled Madame Galen (Bignonia Vox) and is about 25 minutes long.

Every living organism is traversed by slight electrical currents that we can measure with devices similar to those for electroencephalography. The data stream that is generated by these instruments can be harmonized and transformed into notes.

The composition you are about to hear was generated exclusively from the leaves of a plant called Bignonia, which is also sometimes called Madame Galen.

Our third episode is titled "Carotti Wispering" and is about three hours long. It is a generative composition obtained from ambient sounds recorded at Lanificio Carotti and mixed with other samples and loops generated by modular synthesis.

The Lanificio Carotti is a vintage industrial complex, now used as a cultural container and venue for exhibitions and events, located in the center of Fermignano, a small town near Urbino, Italy. This composition was originally produced for a performance by Italian artist Giuliano Del Sorbo.

We recommend listening with headphones or through a high-fidelity system at a barely audible volume.

  • Argos on the beach
    Aug 19 2022

Our second episode is entitled "Argos on the beach" and is about one hour long. Argos, in Greek mythology, was the ship that carried Jason and the Argonauts to the conquest of the Golden Fleece. According to the myth, the ship was magical and could sing while sailing.

At the end of the Argonauts' adventure, the ship was abandoned on the beach, but even as the sun, salt and wind corroded its planking, it never stopped singing. According to another legend, Argos was instead consecrated to Poseidon, king of the sea. Then it was transported to the sky and transformed into the constellation of the Ship Argos.

    Listening with headphones is recommended.

  • Like An Arrow
    Aug 15 2022

Our first episode is entitled "Like An Arrow" and is about twelve hours long. It is a composition taken from the recording of sutra chanting at Zenshinji, Master Engaku Taino's Rinzai Zen Buddhist Temple. The title is taken from the "Kozen Daito Kokushi Yuikai" or "The Last Admonition of Master Kozen Daito," where it is said that time passes like an arrow. Even the unusual duration is inspired by the text of Daito Kokushi: "Be ever mindful, throughout the twelve hours of the day, to apply yourself to the study of the Unthinkable".

The recording of the monks' chanting, along with the drums and ritual bells, has been stretched to a duration of twelve hours, with no other additions than a few isochronic frequencies that should facilitate relaxation in sensitive individuals. This episode can be an interesting tool for those who practice deep meditation sessions or can aid relaxation for those who are bedridden for long periods.

It is recommended that the volume be set to a barely audible level.
