Although happily engaged to be married, Maria felt God call to her to become a nun instead. Together with her confessor, she founded a new religious order, who worked day and night to help the sick and ailing. Establishing several hospitals throughout Mexico she personally brought hope and healing to many and even hid members of the clergy during the Mexican persecution of Catholics.
