  • The Silence of the Lambs (1991): Episode 38
    Aug 7 2025

In this episode, we find ourselves in the mind of a killer and face one of the most iconic duos in cinema history: Clarice Starling and Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) redefined the serial killer thriller and felt more real than other depictions of serial killers. Listen as I analyze the themes of this film and the extensive research done to create the almost perfect predator.

Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Buffalo Bill are a culmination of serial killers. Just like the skin suit being crafted by Buffalo Bill, his character was patched together with characteristics from serial killers Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, Gary Heidnik, and Edmund Kemper. Dr. Hannibal Lecter is fashioned after Albert Fish, Ed Kemper, and Dr. Alfredo Ballí Treviño.

But behind the clever dialogue and bloody set pieces lies a real-world horror. We dive into one of the horrors references The Town That Dreaded Sundown. Inspired by Texarkana Moonlight Murders, a series of unsolved killings in 1946 that haunted a small town. That film’s influence echoed all the way into Scream’s meta-universe.
