Don Balón marcó un antes y un después durante sus 36 años de actividad, no solamente en el periodismo español, sino también en Chile, Perú, México, Francia o Bulgaria. Estos países, e Italia (donde se publicaron algunos extras), llegaron a obtener sus propias franquicias, más allá de la distribución en Latinoamérica de la versión española de la revista durante los años 90. Un caso aparte fue la edición de Venezuela, que fue un paso más allá y prosiguió durante unos años más por libre, a pesar de que la marca terminó su actividad en el resto de países.
