About this listen

Parenting is the hardest job ever – and parenting a highly sensitive child who’s struggling can feel downright impossible. If you’re suffering through endless meltdowns, walking on eggshells to avoid your child’s huge emotions, and losing sleep worrying that you’re failing your child, you’ve landed in the right place. I’m Dr. Hilary Mandzik – clinical psychologist, parenting specialist, and mom of 3. And I’m here to help you feel GOOD about parenting your highly sensitive child. Join me each week on the Raised Resilient podcast as we explore the topics parents worry about most when it comes to raising highly sensitive kids: managing meltdowns, building emotion regulation, understanding highly sensitive kids, making sense of challenging behaviors, building self-esteem, finding parenting strategies that actually work *with* your child’s sensitivity ... and everything in between. I’ll help you understand your child’s behavior (and your reactions to it!) so that even the really hard moments make more sense. I’ll empower you with tools, strategies, and scripts to navigate those really hard moments with connection and confidence. (And I’ll remind you that no tool, strategy, or script is as powerful as your parenting ace – your relationship with your child!) I’m passionate about parenting differently – parenting in a way that sees all kids as good, even when they’re struggling. I’m passionate about breaking unhelpful generational cycles and putting a hard stop to spanking, time outs, shaming, and yelling. I’m passionate about helping highly sensitive kids build the skills they need in order to manage their big emotions successfully ... and parents learning to regulate their own emotions alongside their children. I want to help you stop worrying about whether you’re “raising them right” and feel confident that your kids will grow up trusting themselves and feeling comfortable in their skin … because they were raised resilient. And that’s big. Because raising our kids resilient can literally make this world a better place. Listen, parenting is hard no matter how you do it. You won’t “enjoy every moment”, no matter what that lady at the store says. But I’m here to help you go from just barely surviving to parenting in a way that genuinely feels good, for you and your highly sensitive child. So warm up your coffee and grab your ear buds. It’s time to turn your child’s sensitivity into their SUPERPOWER! • Summer Rewind Series: How to Communicate Effectively with Your Sensitive Child’s Teacher for a Successful School Year with Jess Hammond – Part 2
    Aug 13 2025

In this final Summer Rewind episode, I’m joined once again by veteran teacher and fellow parent Jess Hammond for the second half of our honest, two-part conversation. This time, we’re talking about helping kids build independence with their schoolwork—and what to do when they hit a wall.

We also wade into the tricky waters of homework—what’s helpful, what’s not, and how to advocate for your child if they need extra support, like an IEP or 504 plan.

If school has ever felt like a daily struggle—or even if you're just trying to keep up—this conversation is full of real talk, relatable stories, and gentle reminders that you’re not doing it wrong.

  • Summer Rewind Series: How to Communicate Effectively with Your Sensitive Child’s Teacher for a Successful School Year with Jess Hammond – Part 1
    Aug 6 2025

In this 5th episode of our Summer Rewind Series, we’re bringing back part one of a heartfelt, insight-packed conversation with one of my closest friends—a teacher with 23 years of experience and a parent to two elementary-aged kids. Her dual perspective is one every parent needs to hear.

We talk about how to build strong connections between parents and teachers early in the school year, navigating ADHD as both a teacher and a parent, and what educators really wish parents knew. If you’re raising a highly sensitive child or just want a smoother school year, this episode is full of wisdom and encouragement.

This conversation was too good to fit into one episode—so we didn’t! Be sure to catch this week’s replay, and come back next week for part two of this thoughtful, relatable, and refreshingly real discussion.

  • Summer Rewind Series: Beyond Sleep Training or Co-Sleeping Forever: Finding the Baby Sleep Middle Ground with Rachael Shepherd-Ohta
    Jul 30 2025

We’re continuing our Summer Rewind Series by bringing back another favorite episode—because baby sleep struggles never really go out of season. If you’ve ever found yourself Googling “how do I get my baby to sleep?” at 3am, you’re definitely not alone. Baby sleep can feel like one of the hardest parts of parenting, and the pressure to pick a “side” only makes it harder.

In this episode, I chat with Rachael Shepherd-Ohta, certified sleep specialist and the voice behind Hey, Sleepy Baby, about finding that often-missing middle ground. She shares real-talk about what’s normal, how to get more sleep, and when it might be time to check in with your pediatrician.

Here’s the thing: baby sleep is a developmental milestone, not a skill you can force. But if no one in your house is sleeping, you’re not stuck. There are gentle, supportive sleep solutions that actually work—for both you and your baby.
