 Hija de inmigrantes rusos que se conocieron en el barco viajando a la Argentina, Rebeca Gerschman nació en Carlos Casares el 19 de junio de 1903. Gracias al buen pasar de su familia pudo estudiar y graduarse con honores en Farmacia y Bioquímica.
Alumna y discípula de Bernardo Houssay, fue una investigadora pionera en el estudio de la toxicidad de los radicales libres de oxígeno, al punto que su teoría sobre el tema le valió una candidatura al Premio Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina durante los ‘80.
