  • S1E69 - A Complete Unknown, Nosferatu and Marilyn Manson Unmasked
    Feb 6 2025
    Episode Notes

In what might be their last hurrah for a while, our heroes present a rogues gallery to send them off. This week they have Bob Dylan, Nosferatu, and what could be described as what you might get if Bob Dylan and Nosferatu were to somehow reproduce: Marilyn Manson.

First up it's mustachioed, undead bloodsucker, Count Orlok, a.k.a. Nosferatu. Will Robert Eggers horror epic give Lorraine and Will the fear? Can Will get past Orlok's clumsy ultimatum?

Next is tiresome shock-merchant, Marilyn Manson, who has been up to what can only be described as fairly unsurprising behaviour. Channel 4's 3-piece documentary boils our heroes blood to the point where Count Orlok himself would burn his tongue on it!

Finally, Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown rounds off this trio. Can Timothee Chalamet pull off the job of inhabiting the most cantankerous and obtuse musicians of all time?

This may be our last show for a while. We've had a great time doing it and we hope to be back at some point.

Thanks to NEAR FM.ie for having us, and as Dylan himself said "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue".

  • S1E68 - Better Man and Babygirl
    Jan 23 2025
    Episode Notes

This week our heroes are talking about men and girls. Men in the form of Robbie Williams and his monkey-centric biopic (with a soft 'o' for Lorraine) and then kink-shaming drama, Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman.

Better Man has already come up short at the American box office but will Lorraine and Will let Robbie entertain them one last time on the show (he's been on A LOT)?

Next up is kink-shaming drama, Babygirl. Nicole Kidman is the sexually-repressed CEO of a robotics company (yes, really. The symbolism is that heavy-handed) and Harris Dickinson is Samuel, a young intern who is surprisingly good at making attacking animals submissive (yes, it really is that heavy-handed).

When his perv-radar goes off on Nicole Kidman, sparks fly and she ends up being incredibly harshly judged and punished.

There's no room for kink-shaming in Pop Filter. Unless kink-shaming is your kink. Then they'll let it slide.

    Enjoy!

Well, it's that time of year again and our heroes at Pop Filter are celebrating their most productive year of podcasting ever. What better way to celebrate than with a big tub of Heroes and a recap of Lorraine and Will's pop culture highlights of the year. They even sneak one last mini-review in as they give their thoughts on pope-drama, Conclave. Talk about a stocking filler! Happy Christmas to everyone who listened or downloaded this year. But only those people! Everyone else is getting a piece of coal for Christmas. See you all next year. Lorraine and Will.

  • S1E66 - Boybands Forever & Here
    Dec 12 2024
    Episode Notes

It's the penultimate Pop Filter of 2024 and this week we have a recurring favourite feature of Will and Lorraine's; Boy Bands. Seems like they've talked about them a lot! Well, this might be the daddy of all documentaries. Boybands Forever is a 3 part BBC series that will drag you Back For Good to the mid 90s for a nostalgia trip you'll NEEEEVVVVEEERRR Forget! Next up is what has been touted as a Forrest Gump reunion. It's the movie, Here, which brings director Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright back together for the first time in 30 years. Will this single point of view in time and space covering millions of years drama generate a 'life is like a box of chocolates' or 'stupid is as stupid does'? Spoiler Alert! No. Anyway, it's business as usual for our heroes. Enjoy.

  • S1E65 - Gladiator II and Small Things Like These
    Nov 28 2024
    Episode Notes

This week Will and Lorraine are in their togas and laurels casting their thumbs up or down to see which of this weeks gladiators will triumph. In one corner we have jacked-up fighting machine Paul Mescal who has already kicked the shit out of a bunch of freaky-looking monkeys. In the other we have the mopey assassin, Cillian Murphy. The only hope he has is if Mescal cuts himself on his cheekbones. It seems like it's a David Vs Goliath no-brainer. The lads at Pop Filter love a plucky underdog, though.

  • S1E64 - The Apprentice & Heretic
    Nov 14 2024
    Episode Notes

This episode is going to be bigly. This week, Lorraine and Will are looking at Donald Trump's supervillain origin story, The Apprentice.

They learn how The Donald started as a meek (but rich) rent collector in Hell's Kitchen, New York and set off on his inevitable path towards the White House. Twice.

Next up is creepy new A24 offering, Heretic. Hugh Grant is just a man....standing before two girls....asking them to choose between belief and disbelief. It's the feel-good hit of the year.

Lorraine and Will loves them some A24 but is this just a copy of a copy?

  • S1E63 - Nobody Wants This & The New Sound by Geordie Greep
    Oct 24 2024
    Episode Notes

Our heroes have done a 180 on the Monsters theme from last week and have now turned their attention to a more romantic prospect which is new Netflix comedy drama, Nobody Wants This? Watch Adam Brody and Kristin Bell navigate love and religion in this tale of a too-good-to-be-true guy and a really cool and fairly together girl who happen to treat each other fairly nicely which is a rare enough thing on TV. Swiftly followed by jazz-fusion juggernaut, Geordie Greep and his debut album, The New Sound. Geordie is your typical young man around town who likes to brag about his sexual prowess. He's also got a few choice words to say about your lady-parts, girls! It's all bravado and bluster and he soon reveals himself to be less than impressive, all set to a thunderous backdrop of jazz, salsa, rock and Broadway musical styles all played at a feverish pace. The usual mixed bag from Will and Lorraine. Enjoy!

  • S1E62 - The Substance, Monsters & Ellen: For Your Approval
    Oct 10 2024
    Episode Notes

Our heroes return with another of their loosely themed shows. This time the theme is (arguably) monsters.

First up is Frankensteinesque body-horror fairy tale, The Substance. Will had to go see this one on his own as Lorraine was feeling squeamish. Not to worry, Will braved the relentless nudity for you all. See a return to form performance from Demi Moore and let us know if you agree with Will's take on The Substance as being a drug that was NOT ready for public consumption.

Next up, Lorraine and Will sit through 9 episodes of Ryan Murphy's new true crime series: Monsters, The Erik and Lyle Menedez story. It's a grim but slightly camp affair as we learn about 90's teen killers, Erik and Lyle and their ill-fated parents. Will Lorraine be able to get past the wigs she couldn't overcome in Murphy's similarly-toned OJ Simpson series from a few years ago?

Last up is Ellen Degeneres and her return to stand-up for a farewell lap before she bows out of the showbiz life she claims she has already been kicked out of. Can Ellen really be honest and deal with the allegations of unkindness that brought her talk show to an end? And, more importantly, can she be a funny comic again? Our pals, Lorraine and Will, will let you know.
