About this listen
This week, Kate has the origin story of John Henry Billings who learned his trade as a builder in England, then eventually ending up in Haliburton Countyaround the turn of the 1800's. Plus, Paul has the tale of Toronto's Casa Loma castle built in the 1860's. During WW2 the basement and a secret 800 foot tunnel were turned into a wartime facility called Station "M" (for magic) for the production of equipment to circumvent the Nazi U-Boat threat...then it evolved into a factory for the invention and production of spy gadgets that became an inspiration for Ian Fleming's Station "Q" in his James Bond novels and movies.
Kate Butler is the Director of the Haliburton Highlands Museum. Paul Vorvis is the host of the Your Haliburton Morning Show 7 - 9 a.m. Fridays on Canoe FM 100.9 and streaming on your devices. Haliburton County is in cottage country about 2 1/2 hours north of Toronto. You can contact us at timewarp@canoefm.com
