About this listen

This reimagined tale of Peter Pan follows Peter Pants, a tragic figure consumed by alcoholism and haunted by his own shadow—a living symbol of the void inside him. Unlike the eternal boy of the original myth, Peter Pants is eternally fleeing, trapped in the illusion of Neverland, a dreamlike landscape that mirrors his fractured psyche.

In the early chapters, we see Peter clinging desperately to denial, numbing himself with Tinkerbell’s toxic glow and the hollow laughter of the Lost Boys. Wendy appears as a ghostly echo of innocence lost, reminding him of what he has abandoned. Captain Hook emerges not as a swashbuckling foe, but as the embodiment of Peter’s denial and resistance to truth, wielding a mirror-hook that reflects Peter’s distorted self.

As the story unfolds, Neverland begins to rot and collapse, exposing the hollow core beneath its glittering illusions. Rivers of black liquor replace water, the forests twist into skeletal forms, and Peter’s shadow grows more powerful—eventually leading him rather than following. Each encounter, whether with the Lost Boys, Tinkerbell, Wendy, or Hook, drags Peter deeper into despair and addiction, stripping away his defenses until only his void remains.

The climax arrives when Peter hits rock bottom—a devastating collapse where he loses all illusions and nearly loses himself entirely. In Chapter 10, he is finally forced to confront his shadow directly. This confrontation is both terrifying and liberating: by acknowledging his pain, trauma, and addiction, Peter begins the process of integrating his shadow.

The tale closes not with triumph but with fragile hope. Peter Pants, scarred and broken, takes his first step toward recovery. Neverland remains shattered, but in its ruins, he discovers the possibility of becoming whole—not a boy escaping forever, but a man facing himself for the first time. Special thank you to Alex B.
