We go back to the familiar believing it is the safer option because we have experienced it before. So when dysfunctional relationships have been our familiar it becomes our 'normal'. Therefore, we reject the unfamiliar because it seems scarier. Only now do I see I was behaving habitually because it was what felt normal.
