Nell'estate del 1914 entrambe le parti si aspettavano di conseguire una vittoria decisiva entro la fine dell'anno. Si combatterono molte battaglie su vasta scala, ma nessuna di esse risultò decisiva e l’esito bellico rimase incerto. Il principale teatro di scontri fu quello che conosciamo come fronte occidentale, ovvero il confine tra Francia e Germania; i luoghi di scontro tra Russia, Germania e impero asburgico presero invece il nome di fronte orientale. La guerra fu però, come dice il nome stesso, mondiale perciò nella seconda parte della puntata andremo a scoprire gli scontri avvenuti fuori dall'Europa.
